Zell am See - seemingly endless glacier, mountain and lake panoramas!
Zell am See is the tourist centre and district capital of Pinzgau. Surrounded by mighty 3,000 m peaks and gentle hills, the village is located idyllically between the Zell Lake and the Schmittenhöhe mountain. The 6 km long tunnel keeps through-traffic out of the city, allowing you to shop in the pedestrian zone undisturbed. Due to its first-class ski area and great selection of leisure time activities, Zell am See has what it takes for a great Austrian holiday.
SkiWith the "Ski Alpin Card" lift pass, you have access to the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Fieberbrunn as well as the ski areas of Zell am See/Kaprun for an impressive total of 408 km of piste.
In Zell am See, you can enjoy 138 kilometres of piste and over 49 modern lifts in both ski areas Maiskogel and Schmittenhöhe, as well as the glacier ski area on Kitzsteinhorn, stretching up to 3,203 m.
With the "Kitzsteinhorn-Kaprun" lift pass (off-season), you can make use of the snow-sure, same-name ski area. With its 41 km of piste, the ski area offers mostly intermediate pistes for beginners and leisure skiers. Wide carving pistes and long, sporting runs like the 5 km long piste at the Magnetköpfl lift mountain station really get skiers' hearts pumping. When heading out from Kaprun, you can reach the glacier with both the "Gletscherjet" lift and the panorama lift or, starting from December 2019, with the "K-onnection" which leaves right from the centre.
From Zell am See you can take the CityXpress, the TrassXpress or the Schmittenhöhe train to quickly reach the Schmittenhöhe ski area (2,000 m), whose runs cater to all levels of difficulty. Pros can try out the 4 km long Trass run, considered to be the most difficult in the whole ski area, or the "Black Mamba" with its incline of up to 63%.
The Maiskogel ski area is especially suited for families, with a large proportion of wide and blue pistes. At the Mailkogelköpfl lift you'll also find the longest run in the ski region, which is approx. 7 km long.
Each of the three ski areas holds it's own fun park with tables, slides and jumps. Freeriders can also find more than enough possibilities to run riot. A total of 5 freeride routes as well as a comprehensive information system with info base and info points is available here. On the Schmittenhöhe, for instance, under Sonnenkogel lift, you have the change to let off steam on the open ski area.
A special highlight in this ski area are the many free Wi-Fi hotspots it offers for all its visitors! Only a few easy steps are required to access the Internet and you can instantly supply your friends and family with your holiday news and photos.
Starting from December 2019, the Schmittenhöhe will be connected with the Skicircus Saalbach Hintergrlemm Leogang Fieberbrunn. The brand new "zellamseeXpress" now departs from Viehhofen im Glemmtal. Six cabins have a jukebox that you can connect devices to in order to play music. A ski bus also runs from Viehhofen and Vorderglemm. By the year 2023, the Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn and the Zell am See-Kaprun ski area should be completely merged together. This will then make for the largest interconnect ski area in all of Austria.
For many, Zell am See and Kaprun are the paragon of après ski. A surplus of cosy mountain restaurants and snack spots are an attractive point on a day of skiing. Particularly recommended is the apres ski bar "Schnapps-Hans" on Schmittenhöhe or the rustic-cosy "Pinzgauer Hütte". Numerous après ski bars, pubs and discos in Zell or Kaprun await your visit in the evening. In bars and clubs such as "Karambar", "Crazy Daisy" or the "Diele", night is guaranteed to turn into day.
Many other activities, e.g. tobogganing (night and day), ice skating, or a visit to the pool with sauna supplement your options. Whoever wants to be up in the sky can dare the parachute jump, fly a kite around the region or enjoy the view in a glider. Also strolling around the pedestrian area with its shops and cafés brings a lot of change.
Cross-country skiers will certainly not get a raw deal in Zell am See! The picturesque landscape surrounding Zell Lake is the ideal terrain for the Nordic disciplines. Zell am See and Kaprun provide approx. 38 km of trail. Kaprun offers 25 km, one of which is a 3 km high-altitude glacial run (2,900 m) at the Kitzsteinhorn. This tour will be a real highlight in the winter holidays for all cross-country skiing fans!
Zell am See offers a total of approx. 13 km of diverse trails. The circuit course on the frozen lake is a special treat! The high run of Zell (1,300 m) is accessible in just five minutes taking the CityXpress! The 3 km trail is ideal for the classic style and leads skiers along the beautiful scenery of the Schmittenhöhe.
Night tracks can be found in Kaprun as well as in Zell am See-Schüttdorf, both with a length of approx. 4 km. If this is still not enough, you can find a further 200 km of trails in the skiing region, incl. the Saalbach and Pinzga trails.
