Bad Hofgastein - skiing, mountains and thermal springs!
Bad Hofgastein (857 m) is located in the centre of Gastein Valley. The historical centre with lovely pedestrian zone doesn't only offer shopping opportunities, but is dotted with traditional hotels, which offer maintained hospitality as well as thermal baths. Bad Hofgastein is particularly prominent, due to its Alpine thermal baths: a total of 6 thermal baths, saunas and even its own mountain lake are waiting to be discovered! A large variety of sport and leisure activities round off the selection. Those looking for a good mix of relaxation and winter sport fun, are definitely at the right place here!
SkiThe "Ski amadé" lift pass gives you access to a total of 760 kilometres of piste, as well as 270 lifts (see ski region)! The ski region Gastein, with its 186 km of piste and 47 lifts is one of the largest and nicest areas of the Salzburger Land. Due to the altitude (up to 2,686 m), excellent snow and piste conditions and many snow cannons, fantastic snow conditions are available through to spring.
Beginners will find lovely, wide pistes throughout the entire area. In close proximity to Bad Hofgastein there is further there is also the ski centre Angertal. More challenging are the deep snow runs at Graukogel, which run over into the black FIS racing stretches. Deep snow areas, e.g. at Kreuzkogel as well as numerous ski routes, offer the perfect playground for cracks! The "Hohe Scharte Nord" at the Schlossalm however, covers the largest difference in altitude in the entire Eastern Apline area.
Snowboarders can burn off energy at the snow parks on Stubnerkogel and Kreuzkogel. The floodlit piste at Stubnerkogel also attracts skiers in the evening.
All over the ski area there are Wi-Fi-hotspots which give you the opportunity to stay in contact with your friends during your winter holidays and to upload the first photos from your stay.
All in all, four areas await you in Gastein Valley with the ski area Dorfgastein-Großarltal and Schlossalm-Angertal-Stubnerkogel, the Graukogel and Sportgastein; with their diverse, perfectly connected offer, will make winter sports fans' pulses race.
Apres ski starts on the piste in Bad Hofgastein, where numerous lodges invite you into linger. You can also party in various bars and pubs - one hot tip is the "Sky Bar", which is located directly above the Alpen thermal springs and offers both delicious cocktails and a great view. Party animals can head to "Diskostadl" and dance the night away. Spend a relaxing evening in one of the restaurants and tuck in to a hearty meal to strengthen up for the next day.
Relax after a great day of skiing in the "Alpen Therme", Europe's most modern alpine health and leisure oasis with 6 different themed areas, e.g. the sauna area, family and relax area. A tobogganing evening on the night tobogganing run in Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein or Dorfgastein promises great fun for young and old. Furthermore, you can take advantage of ice skating, curling, indoor tennis or riding at the riding stables in Bad Hofgastein. Or take a tour along though the wonderful nature of the Gastein valley on one of the local winter hiking trails.
History buffs can visit the Klammstein Castle at the valley entrance, offering an exhibition about the developement of the castle. Families shouldn't miss out on a trip to the fortress, either: A ghostly tour is offered for the little thriller fans.
In the Gastein valley there is a network of 45 km of prepared track, which are especially suited for first-timers. Experienced cross-country skiers will also find a challenging circuit. Experience landscape highlights on the pristine Angertal trail. Beautiful views and high snow security are promised by the 10 km long high-altitude track at Sportgastein (1,600 - 1,650 m), where you will also find a cross-country centre.
The 5 km long floodlit trail at Bad Gastein provides an evening ski opportunity, as well as the night trail in the "Kurpark" at Bad Hofgastein. The longest trail is the Sportgastein track with a length of 10 km. Equipment hire, cross-country schools and numerous extra prepared skating trails round off the selection in Gastein valley.
