If you'd rather stick to alpine skiing, there are ideal conditions to do so in the "Dachstein West" ski area approx. 20 km away.
SkiThe "Dachstein-West" ski region gives you access to 119 km of diverse pistes. Numerous ski areas in the Dachstein region and in Salzkammergut, such as Dachstein West, Abtenau, Feuerkogel and the Freesports Arena Krippenstein can be used. Beginners, intermediates and not forgetting pros will all find the appropriate descent. However wide, easy to intermediate level pistes amid dense winter forests are typical to this region. The free ski buses ensure an easy transfer between the different resorts in the Dachstein West region and enable you to get to all the highlights trouble free. These include of course the difficult "Alexandra-Meissnitzer" descent in Abtenau and the "Zinken Steilhang" in Roßfeld. A very popular destination for snowboarders is the funpark with jumps, rails and tables at the Hornspitz mountain station. Freestylers really get their moneys worth here!
The 8-person mountain railway Donnerkogelbahn and the 8-person Panorama Jet Gosau cater for even more comfort and faster access. Additionally, a new kid's club is available in the ski area, offering part time or all-day child care service for children from 1 year.
The panorama ski circuit "Panoronda" with a total of 44 km of piste is a diverse experience on perfectly prepared and signposted pistes. Cosy huts and sun terraces are available for breaks and especially for enjoying the magnificent panorama view.
Annually, in March, just in time for sunshine skiing, the "Gaudi-Week" is on! This events offer a full programme of entertainment away from the pistes, over the entire week. On a daily basis, you can experience culinary highlights, early morning skiing, skiline challenges, live music, cool DJs and loads of après ski. Highlights include e.g. free rides with the dog-sledges or snow cats, ski equipment test, race training and nigh-skiing under floodlights.
After a strenuous day on the pistes or a good long walk in the surrounding area, numerous quaint huts and restaurants invite you in to spoil you with traditional regional fare. If you'd like to experience some local history, then you should pay a visit to the neighbouring resort of Bad Ischl. It was here that the Austrian Kaiser Franz Joseph I. had his annual summer holiday in the 19th Century and also where he proposed to his future wife, Empress Sisi. Equally worthwhile is a walk through the neighbouring village of Hallstatt in the south of Bad Goisern and around Lake Hallstatt. In 1997 this wonderful resort was declared a World Heritage Site. Unique architecture combined with unforgettable nature makes for an experience that definitely shouldn't be missed. For those who enjoy partying late into the night are in the right place at suitably called disco "en-joy".
Cross country fans will find true paradise here in Bad Goisern. A total of approx. 40 km of trail are at your disposal. 23 km are to be found at the high altitude trail centre,"Panorama Nova". This really shouldn't be missed out on, as at an altitude of between 1000 - 1200 m, a fantastic view of the Goiser valley and its impressive mountains opens up to you. Because all difficulty levels are covered here, both beginners and pros get their moneys worth. A further highlight is the "FIS-Wettkamp" trail which, at 5 km in length is extremely demanding and provides even the most advanced with a real challenge.
