General information
Mariazell (at an altitude of 868 - 1266 m), one of Europes most renowned places of pilgrimage, looks back to a rich history of art and culture. Besides the basilica, many churches and holy places, much more is to be found in this small village with its 1947 inhabitants.
Enjoy a nostalgic train ride on the famous 'Mariazellerbahn' train and the amazing views of the surrounding mountains. Landscape, fauna and flora present themselves in manifold variations and colours. Fountains, rivers and lakes invite the visitor for sports and recreation. Adventurers, nature lovers and those who prefer town life will all enjoy themselves here.
Bruck, a town of cultural interest, and Kapfenberg, the economic and sporting centre of Upper Styria, constitute a vivid contrast to the idyll and diversity of nature.
How to get there
By car:
Via Vienna - motorway A1 'Westautobahn' - exit St. Pölten Süd - Federal road B20 - Freiland - Mariazell (about 150 km).
Via Salzburg - motorway A1 'Westautobahn' - exit Ybbs - Neubruck - Lassingrotte - Mariazell (about 250 km).
Via Graz- motorway A9 'Phyrnautobahn' - Kapfenberg - Mariazell (about 120 km)
By train:
Railway station St. Pölten, Mürzzuschlag or Bruck/Mur, continue by bus or the nostalgic 'Mariazellerbahn' train.
Direct bus connections from Vienna ('Wien Mitte' stop) and Graz to Mariazell are available.
By plane:
Graz airport - 125 km (international connecting flights)
Vienna International Airport - 160 km
Summer resort
While walking on the old pilgrimage trail or hiking, climbing and cycling along well marked tracks, the nature lover will be fascinated by the Alpine mountain scenery of Mariazell. The world's longest interconnected mountain bike track (Ramsau - Mürzzuschlag - Graz and back), 900 km long and with a 25,000 m difference in altitude, also leads through this beautiful countryside.
The clear waters of lake 'Erlaufsee' (length: 1.5 km) - surrounded by 8.000 m2 of sandy beaches and 5.000 m2 of sun bathing lawns - promises relaxation and refreshment. Many different kinds of water sports activities are also offered.
Other leisure facilities available are a funpark, indoor swimming pool, bowling alley, minigolf, flying facilities and more.
Winter resort
The skiing region 'Mariazeller Bürgeralpe' offers 11.5 km of well-managed pistes for all levels of ability. Thanks to snow machines, snow is guaranteed from December until March. One cable car, two chairlifts and two T-bar lifts facilitate the ascent. A funpark for snowboarders, a new adapted FIS skirun, a toboggan run and ice skating on the frozen lake 'Erlaufsee' will make this holiday a special experience.
Non-alpine skiers will find 70 km of well-prepared regional cross-country skiing tracks (including 20 km of skating tracks) and 20 km of winter walking trails at their disposal.
