The market town of Zirl, located only 10 km from Innsbruck, boasts a popular climbing area, the so-called Martinswand. The component localities Zirl, Zirl Bahnhof, Hochzirl, Eigenhofen and Dirschenbach form the municipality of Zirl. Also the popular climbing
area Martinswand, the Ehnbachklamm gorge as well as parts of the Nordkette mountain chain belong to the municipal territory. The village was first mentioned in 799 AD. But due to its location at the Roman road Via Claudia Augusta, already in early times Zirl
represented an important traffic junction.
