About Zirl - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Zirl, the idyllically located holiday resort, is located at the end of the Karwendel mountain chain at the south-east end of the Zirler Berg mountain (1,057 m asl). Consequently it is an ideal starting point for numerous hikes and mountain tours. Among the most popular destinations are the Neue Magdeburger Hütte mountain hut (Martinsbergalm pasture) or the Solsteinhaus refuge, located at the foot of the Grosser Solstein mountain. Another popular excursion destination is the rock face Martinswand with its fixed-rope route and its variety of climbing routes. It is not only a well-known climbing area, but also part of the nature reserve “Alpenpark Karwendel” in the Karwendel mountain chain. In the village there are tennis courts, an outdoor pool, a miniature golf facility and a shooting range. And if you seek the adrenaline thrill, we recommend you to do a canyoning and rafting tour in the Imst gorge!
In winter Zirl offers great fun on the slopes: within 15 to 45 minutes you comfortably reach various skiing areas in the surroundings such as the Rangger Köpfl, Seefeld, Axamer Lizum and Kühtai skiing areas as well as the skiing areas of Innsbruck and the Oetztal valley. Sights in the village are the parish church “Zum Heiligen Kreuz” decorated with frescoes of the painter Franz Plattner. In 1391 it was mentioned for the first time, after its destruction in the 19th century is was reconstructed. Further sacred buildings are the Saint Michael chapel and the Geisterbühel chapel. High above the village, there is the ruin of Fragenstein Castle, built in 1209. In the course of the 18th century, in the Spanish Succession Wars, the castle got destroyed. Today Fragenstein is part of a nature reserve.
Zirl | The market town of Zirl, located only 10 km from Innsbruck, boasts a popular climbing area, the so-called Martinswand. The component localities Zirl, Zirl Bahnhof, Hochzirl, Eigenhofen and Dirschenbach form the municipality of Zirl
