About Winklern - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Winklern - gateway to the "Hohe Tauern National Park"!
The idyllic winter resort Winklern is situated at an altitude of 966 m, embedded among the Grossglockner-Massiv, Kreuzeck group, and the Lienz Dolomites. Its location at the foot of the Iselberg with its great climate and scenic diversity makes Winklern an especially popular holiday destination. Due to the central position there are magnificent pistes, cross-country tracks, toboggan runs, and ski routes available in both Heiligenblut and Eastern Tyrol. Winklern itself also has a unique natural toboggan run, a curling track, an ice rink, and cleared winter hiking trails. The townscape of Winklern is significantly shaped by the village's landmark, the late Romanesque toll tower, a former aristocratic estate. But a visit to the late Romanesque parish church will also be worth your while. You can spend a superb ski holiday in Winklern with cultural highlights and a lot of relaxation and fun!
SkiThe lift pass "Großglockner" gives you access to 55 kilometres of snow-sure and free pistes as well as 13 lifts between 1,301 and 2,989 m. Here, at the foot of Austria's highest mountain (3,798 m), skiers, snowboarders and carvers can mainly enjoy intermediate slopes - and a dream-like backdrop!
The broad slopes at Sonnen- and Fleissalm are perfect in order to try out the first swings in the snow. The steep piste from the Schareck summit to the Fallbichl is a true challenge for experienced skiers as well, just like the ski route from Schareck to Fleissalm. The lift that goes through a former water pipeline tunnel from the Roßbach midway station to Fleissalm is a unique experience.
The greater part of the pistes is above the tree line, so that off-piste fans can make short side trips through the deep snow. The Freeride Arena at Großglockner leaves nothing to be desired. There are several different runs for ski and boarders waiting to be explored in the area between Gjaidtroghöhe at an altitude of 2,989 m, and the mountain valley Heiligenblut at an altitude of 1,288 m - free riders can let off steam on an area of more than 15 km². Ski tours can best be made in the High Tauern National Park, which is one of the largest ski touring areas in the Eastern Alps. There even is a National Park ski tour bus.
The quaint mountain huts in the ski area invite you to enjoy regional specialities with a unique mountain panorama view. Family with children and those looking for relaxation will have a wonderful time here.
After an eventful and exciting day on skis you can spend a relaxed evening with friends in a ski hut with typically Austrian specialities and schnapps. In Winklern for example, the "Winklerner Hut", located on an altitude of 1,906 m, welcomes you to culinary treats. Homemade "kasnudeln", dumplings or "spaetzle" you will surely find your favourite, and can allow the day to wind down.
Alternatively you can have fun on the natural toboggan run, on the ice skating rink or while curling. An idyllic horse-drawn sleigh ride or an unhurried winter hike on prepared trails could also be an option.
Those who are in for a little more action should get on their way to Mörtschach or Heiligenblut in the evening, where you can look forward to numerous further pubs and huts. Here you can dance and party until late in the night.
Winklern has a modest and idyllic offer of cross-country trails. In Heiligenblut, approx. 22 km distant, you can find another well-kept network of cross-country trails that's altogether approx. 12 km long.
The Sonnblick trail is a 4 km long trail with hardly any ascends, which makes it well suited for beginners. The high altitude trail at Fallbichl is a little more ambitious, but manageable even with a medium level of experience. At 6 km the Großglockner trail is the longest one in the holiday region.
Those who want to newly learn this healthy and wonderful type of sports can book special lessons in resorts. It's worth a try enjoy the mountain air against the backdrop of beautiful landscapes!
