About Unken - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Unken - skiing in the Heutal!
Unken lies at an altitude of approx. 986 and is also known as the "gateway to Pinzgau". The idyllic village is especially interesting for those who like some peace and quiet during their holidays. The Heutal, in which Unken is located, is a snow-sure area and an ideal destination for skiers, cross-country skiers and sun seekers. The cosy ski area offers easy to intermediate pistes and therefore is well-suited for families. History fans will find lots to explore here, e.g. with the fort Kniepass, which was built in the 13th century and gives insights into the tales of Unken and the Salzburger Land. Many activities, such as cross-country skiing, winter hiking or adventurous snow-kiting are sure to kill boredom. Or maybe you just want to relax on a romantic horse-drawn sleigh ride through the impressive winter landscape. Afterwards you can try some of the great regional specialities in one of the cosy huts. No matter what you choose to do, a diverse winter holiday is guaranteed in Unken.
SkiRight in the heart of the Salzburger Saalachtal lies Unken, with it's family-friendly ski area "Unken-Heutal". The 12 km of easy to intermediate pistes between 1,000 and 1,600 m altitude are accessible via 4 lift systems. Thanks to the modern snow-making systems you can enjoy great snow conditions throughout the while season. The pistes are also well suited for beginners and the smallest ski enthusiasts. Great powder snow slopes will make the experts' hearts beat faster. Those looking for a challenge can venture up to the Hochwena Alpin piste in neighbouring Lofer: the black run extends along the steep North flank of the Grubhörndl. The 4 km long Wildalmlift-Heutal descent with 500 m difference in altitude offer great skiing enjoyment. A snow park attracts all freestylers to the Wildalm lift. Those looking for a bit more diversity will find the "Mellow Snowpark L.A" in neighbouring Lofer, with many rails, kickers & more. The ski school Unken further offers snowshoe hikes, besides their standard programme of snowboard, freestyle, ski and children's tuition. The family ski area therefore is diverse and attractive all in one.
Unken is more likely to be known for its peace and cordiality. Anyone looking for sporting variety after skiing can find this in the indoor pool in the recreational centre or can have a go at curling. The natural tobogganing run Hochalm ensures fun with an 8 km long descent. Those wanting to party can take a trip into Lofer, which is only approx. 9 km away. Once there, you shouldn't miss the apres ski parties in the "Hasenstall" on the Loferer Alm or in the "Karussell" or "Bar Bobos" in the valley.
Fans of this Nordic sport will not be left wanting in the Salzburger Saalachtal: Lofer alone offers a network of 50 km of trails, of which 35 km are easy and 15 km of a medium level. A further 30 km in Unken-Heutal join this, of which 20 km are rather easy and 10 km can be classified as medium. Simple circuits can be found especially in the valley, whereas the snow-sure high-altitude trails on the Loferer Alm and in the Heutal are more demanding. The high-altitude trail on the Loferer Alm is especially sunny, making it highly recommended for all those who want to catch some rays on the side. There is also the opportunity to take a trip to the Winklmoosalm on the Bavarian side. The trail leads slightly uphill and requires a bit of stamina!
