About Traunkirchen - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Traunkirchen - snowy delight with a great view in sight!
The picturesque little town of Traunkirchen lies at an altitude of 422 m by the lovely Traunsee lake in the Salzkammergut. Visitors are attracted by the hospitality and the interesting traditions, and especially by the breathtaking landscape. The view of the wonderful mountain panorama and the idyllic lake is enough to make anyone gasp. The centre of Traunkirchen is located on a peninsula at the western shore of the lake and is characterised by the impressive backdrop of the Traunstein (1,691 m). The prime location means the town has something for everyone: active holidaymakers have approx. 8 km of winter hiking trails, a natural tobogganing run and approx. 14 km of cross-country trails; relaxation seekers can go on a romantic horse-drawn carriage ride.
SkiThe "Feuerkogel" lift pass allows you to access a true snowy paradise in the heart of the Salzkammergut. A total of 12 kilometres of piste at an altitude from 475 to 1,680 m are excellently connected to the Ebensee lake with an 8-person cable car built in 2009 and a new 6-person chairlift, as well as 5 tow lifts. The family-friendly pistes are perfectly suited to beginners and those returning to the sport. Advanced skiers have the special challenge of the approx. 6 km long unprepared ski route that leads right down into the valley. The prepared pistes on the plateau lets you carve nice turns on your board. The most popular are the Steinkogel lift and the Gsoll lift, but many boarders prefer to test the untouched slopes down into the valley. The high plateau of the Feuerkogel will enchant you with an idyllic winter landscape and a fascinating view of the Upper Austrian region right through to the Dachstein mountains. A particular highlight is the night skiing with music and igloo bar. Tourers and snowshoe hikers will appreciate the plateau as a starting point for trips of all difficulty levels.
The best way to end the day in Traunkirchen is with a hearty meal in one of the traditional pubs. Wine connoisseurs should not miss a visit to the vinotheque "Greisslerei Traunkirchen". Besides Austrian wines you will also find and enjoy pasts, chutneys, marmalades and spirits. The Seaside Lounge invites you to review the day in a cosy atmosphere. For enjoying an active evening programme you have the possibility to use the natural toboggan run or the natural ice rink.
Approx. 12 km of cross-country track await you in Traunkirchen. They start at the Traunkirchen tennis courts. From here, you can choose between two routes: beginners are recommended to take the shorter route, approx. 5 km long, via Feichten and Weiermayer. A further trail with a distance of around 12 km goes up to 590 m in altitude and leads past villages such as Hessenberg and Neukirchen back to Traunkirchen. There are numerous other trails in the surrounding area.
