Strass - gateway to the Zillertal!
Strass (522 m) is located at the entrance to the Zillertal. A free ski bus runs to the 8 km distant Spieljoch lift in Fügen and the 13 km distant Hochzillertal lift in Kaltenbach. Experience perfect winter sports areas with diverse and numerous pistes. Entertainment options including an artificial ice rink for skating and hockey, gorgeous winter hiking trails and cross-country skiing trails await you in Strass. Relaxation seekers will enjoy the cosy, typical Tyrolean atmosphere or let themselves be spoilt by excellent regional cuisine. You always wanted to know how cheese and bacon are produced? Then visit the "Zillertaler Speckstube" or the "Schaukäserei" in Fügen! Whether culture buff or sports enthusiast, day-trip fan, trekker or simply in need of relaxation, Strass is the central starting point for all sorts of activities. If you want to party in the evening, you will definitely get your money's worth in neighbouring Fügen.
SkiWith the "Zillertaler Superskipass" you can choose from 506 kilometres of piste in Hochfügen, at the Spieljoch, in Hochzillertal, in the Zillertal Arena (Zell, Gerlos, Königsleiten, Wald, Krimml and Gerlosstein), at Penken, and Ahorn, at the Horberg, in the "Ski and Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000" (Finkenberg, Eggalm, Rastkogl, Hintertux Glacier) and at the Wildkogel-Arena at Bramberg. The ski areas are all excellently linked to one another by a free train and bus shuttle (see ski region). Since a few years, the Zillertal Arena offers free-of-charge Wi-Fi in all of its ski areas! In other words, not only can you enjoy the white bliss and the sun, but also share your latest experiences and highlights directly with your loved ones at home.
Two ski areas are located in close proximity: the Spieljoch at Fügen and the Hochfügen-Hochzillertal ski areas. The connection of the two ski areas combines the once separate area, forming one area with approx. 77 kilometres of piste and 39 lifts between 560 m - 2,378 m. This guarantees pampered winter sports fans snow until the end of April.
The Upper Zillertal is especially great for skiers looking for an area that is suitable for all skill levels. From leisurely valley runs to first-class free ride areas to snow parks, you can find everything here! A definite highlight is offered with the floodlit piste in Kaltenbach, open once a week.
The Spieljoch ski area offers approx. 17 km of excellently prepared piste, 12 lifts and a magic carpet conveyor lift for the first ski steps in the snow. The 7 km long valley run to Fügen will thrill pleasure skiers. Here the emphasis is on family-friendly and child-friendly, and the pistes are optimal for those looking for security and relaxing skiing, instead of the absolute "ski high life".
Compared with other moderate resorts in Zillertal, the neighbouring resort Fügen in Zillertal is "the place to be". Lodges invite skiers in for refreshment, e.g. the cosy "Schihütte" at the Spieljoch valley run. Once in the valley, apres ski really gets started. Whether under an umbrella or in the bars, visitors party, dance and flirt until they drop. Later on the party moves into the clubs and discos.
A culinary highlight of the ski area Kaltenbach-Hochzillertal are the crystal huts, which can be found in the mountain station Kristall-Express at an altitude of 2,150 m and offers you young, creative cuisine at attractive prices. Fresh, regional products are served. In the inner huts, you can find an open fireplace as well as quaint parlours, and nice weather providing, a bar-adjacent sun terrace with lounge chairs and water beds can be enjoyed. In addition, since the winter season 2013/2014, a wine cellar has been added.
If you don't want to get off your boards in the evening, simply head to the lit pistes for some night skiing! You'd rather have a more relaxed evening? No problem! The hotel bars and other various guest houses in Strass are happy to serve you.
Every resort in the Zillertal has its own cross-country network. In total this forms a network of approx. 200 km length. With a total of 53 km of tracks this is the first holiday region in the Ziller Valley, together with the resorts Bruck, Fügen, Kaltenbach, Strass, Stumm and Uderns which form the ideal destination for cross-country skiers.
Especially lovely is the promenade track which runs from Kaltenbach to Aschau and connects the two resorts over 5 km. Further the easily to be reached trails at Fügen are also highly recommendable. The 1 km long high altitude track at 1,800 m offers an impressive view of the high Alpine landscape of the upper Zillertal.
In Uderns there is a 1.5 km long illuminated piste, a further highlight of the region. This piste enables visitors of all skiing levels to continue practising in the evenings. If you are looking for a challenge, try the trail from Fügen via Uderns to Ried, with 15 km the longest in the entire Zillertal.
