About St. Polten - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
St. Polten is a renowned Baroque and administrative center. The city has until the end of the Middle Ages possession of the Diocese of Passau. In 1481 the city gave Bishop Friedrich Mauerkircher Hungarian King Matthias Corvinus as collateral, which turned into one of the most important strategic points of its Lower Austria, in the context of conflict or the Emperor Frederick III.

In 1984 the first public debate on moving residence Lower Austria Vienna in one of the provincial cities (Vienna itself the status of federal land). 56% of citizens voting in Lower Austria have ruled the referendum held on 1 and 2 March 1986 for a separate regional capital. Sankt Pölten has met the 45% most options, imposing such cities before Krems (29%), Baden (8%), Tulln an der Donau (5%) and Wiener Neustadt (4%). So on July 10, 1986 Sankt Polten officially became the capital of Lower Austria.
The city lies on the Traisen river and is located north of the Alps and south of the Wachau. It is part of the Mostviertel, the southwest region of Lower Austria.
