St. Jakob im Defereggental - pure nature!
In a quaint valley, embedded in the High Tauern National Park in Eastern Tyrol, lies the idyllic village of St. Jakob at an altitude of 1.389 m. Even though today the Defereggental is one of the nicest Alp valleys of Tyrol and has become a popular holiday destination, it has not lost any of its natural charm. Here you will still find enchanting winter scenery in nearly untouched nature. Therefore, winter hikers will definitely get their money's worth.
The centre of St. Jakob is shaped by beautiful old stone buildings from the time of the squires. The famous alpine village Jagdhausalm, also known as "Klein-Tibet", is worth a visit as well. Furthermore, the surrounding ski area does not leaves anything to be desired! Reliable snow conditions and a romantic alpine panorama make your winter holiday extraordinary!
SkiWith the lift pass "SkiHit" you have access to all East Tyrol ski areas, such as the Mölltal Glacier and Ankogel (see ski region). The total of 358 km of optimally prepared pistes in the Grossglockner-Resort Kals-Matrei, Brunnalm, Lienzer Dolomiten, Silian, Obertiliach, and Kartitsch have something in store for every skill level. The ski area Brunnalm, which is easily accessible from St. Jakob, has a lot to offer with its 52 km of piste. No matter whether, as a beginner, you would like to show off your skills by taking one of the two long descents into the valley, or would rather use the athletic descent from the mountain station 3 person chairlift Mooserberg down to the valley - everyone will find what they are looking for here.
The snow park "defRaggn" has been an insiders' tip for snowboarders and free skiers over the past several years. With its numerous obstacles, the spacious park has developed into a unique freestyle area. Should you still be full of energy after all this, the Backyard park offers the opportunity to run riot until late at night, even after the lifts have stopped operating for the day. Furthermore, an ideal meeting point for a fun and adventurous ski day with the family is the WISBI ("How fast am I?") piste in the ski area Brunnalm. Far away from mass tourism and surrounded by sun-lit slopes, nothing stands in the way of a perfect holiday.
Après ski in St. Jakob is very easy-going. After a fun day on the pistes you can get together in cosy huts and let the day fade away, or you can enjoy the culinary delicacies of the region in various guest houses. The "Brugger Alm" (1,350 m) with its cosy atmosphere, great view, and of course its delicious Tyrolean specialities, is highly recommendable. Here you can enjoy everything that the skiers heart could desire from "Kaiserschmarrn" (sugared pancake with raisins) to Tyrolean "Gröstl", "Bretteljause" (plate of cold cuts) and Viennese "Schnitzel".
For those who like to be active, the Defereggental offers various athletic and recreational activities off the piste. One of those is the approx. 2 km long nature and night tobogganing run "Alpe Stalle" which is always illuminated and easily reachable on foot. Winter hikers and cross-country skiers do not miss out either, they will experience a fascinating spectacle of nature on an approx. 10 km long hiking trail.
Cross-country trails in such beautiful, untouched surroundings can only be found in the Defereggental. In total there are 70 km of tracks available, divided into classic and skating style, in all levels of difficulty. The entire network takes you away from the roads and over snowy meadows and through forests. The trails area perfectly connected to each other, so that you can follow the "Schwarzach" river nearly through the entire valley.
A high altitude trail named "Staller Sattel" offers powder snow and a great panorama view at an altitude of nearly 2,000 m. If you want to remain sporty in the evenings this track is also illuminated in the evenings - a real highlight! But also the trails in the valley, surrounded by various 3,000 metre mountains, offer a beautiful natural backdrop.
The Defereggen cross-country trail network is labelled with a quality seal.
