St. Georgen ob Murau - skiing fun for the whole family!
St. Georgen ob Murau is the main resort of the muncipality St. Georgen am Kreischberg, which is home to approx. 1.880 inhabitants. The two districts St. Georgen and St. Lorenzen are connected by the "Holz-Europabrücke", which is at the moment the largest unsupported wooden bridge and a fascinating landmark in the region. Thanks to the direct proximity to the mountains Kreischberg and Frauenalpe, fans of skiing and snowboarding of all ages can get to know a diverse and family-friendly ski area.
The region also has a lot to offer apart from skiing. Numerous mountain huts, pubs and bars offer not only excellent regional specialities, but also music and party until late at night.
Whether a romantic hike through the snowy landscapes, ice skating, night tobogganing at Kreischberg, an excursion on snow shoes or a ski tour - the special flair of the holiday region in Mur Valley will enchant you!
SkiYou can go carving and boarding to your heart's content on a total of 65 km in two of the biggest ski areas in Styria - and all that with only one lift pass: The 2-in-1 lift pass for the ski areas of Kreischberg and Lachtal! It does not matter if you are a wallower, a lover of variety or a freestyler, everybody will get their money's worth.
The Kreischberg ski area was awarded several times. It comprises 40 km of piste and spreads up to the mountains Kreischberg (2,002 m) and Rosenkranzhöhe (2,118 m). Here, among others, a new 10-person gondola gives you access to the broad pistes with a panoramic view. With a speed track and a permanent racing track, Kreischberg is popular amongst those who like to compete against each other, and always comes up with a new challenge. The snow making systems have been renewed in 2015, so that now even the last pistes can be covered with artiticial snow, which gives the ski area a high guarantee of snow.
Various facilities of kids, such as e.g. the Flintstones-themed "Yabba-Dabba-Doo-Land" or the "Dino Park" make the ski area very family-friendly. The little ones are perfectly well cared for with the kid's area with wavy slope, tubing trail, a Kreischi Tampolin as well as children's care service, ski kindergarten and a ski school.
One of the sportive highlights and certainly one of the region's landmarks is the "Snowpard Kreischberg". Freestylers have discovered it a long time ago. The well-shaped freestyle areal is located on an altitude of 1,900 m in the area around the Sunshine lifts. It comprises a medium and a beginner line, as well as a small half pipe dating back to the beginnings of the freestyle scene at Kreischberg.
Further 25 km of piste await you in nearby Lachtal. Well-groomed pistes and a true El Dorado for freeriders with excellent offroad pistes are to be found here. Fans of powder snow can look forward to 10 additional kilometres of ski routes. Many natural jumps are perfect for adults, and the little ones can let off steam in the spacious kid's area "Kinder-Lachtal". The area at Hoher Zinken (2,222 km) has a magic carpet, teddy tow lift, mini slalum, a course with colourful figures, a wavy trail and a treasure hunt, which makes it the perfect place to be for children.
If you love variation, we recommend the Kitzbüheler Alpen AllStarCard, which is valid in the ski areas of e.g. Wilder Kaiser - Brixental, Schneewinkel, Skiregion Dachstein West, Zell am See - Kaprun. With this lift pass you can experience unlimited skiing fun on 2.794 km of piste in 25 ski regions in Tyrol and Salzburg!
In the Kreischberg ski area, a total of 12 cosy huts and bars provide sustenance. The Restaurant Panoramaschirm on an altitude of 2,002 m offers a very special view with its 360 ° panorama over the surrounding mountain landscapes. The menu lists delicious Styrian specialities and other things.
The trendy pub "Schluckspecht" is very popular with young and old, but also in the valley there are a number of possibilities to end the day, such as e.g. at "Einkehrschwung" or the "Kastanienbar", where you can party until late at night.
The approx. 1.2 km long Kreischberg toboggan run is especially loved by the youngest ones. Once per week you can enjoy tobogganing until the evening.
Up on Kreischberg there are two new hiking trails that both start at the 6-person gondola's mountain station: The "Kreischberg See Runde" is a nice one hour walk around the impounding reservoir, which is the heart of the snow making system. The "Zirben Wanderweg" leads through the pine wood to the Rosenkranz-lifts' valley station. The hikes takes approx. 2 hours.
Apart from that there a various more leisure time activities available in the valley. Fans of swimming and sauna can visit the Murau public indoor pool and if you are looking for adventure you can dare a tandem jump with a paraglider.
In the Murau-Kreischberg region, you can expect to find approx. 46 km of well-prepared cross-country trails with diverse levels of difficulty for both beginners and experts alike.
The high-altitude trail on the Kreischberg offers you a total of 2.5 km of quiet and relaxation while off the piste. Whether it be in classic style or skating style, you can make your way through enchanting pine tree forests at an altitude of 1,800 m.
