Oberau - skiing jewel of Tyrol!
Oberau is situated at 936 m on the edge of the Kitzbühel Alps, in the centre of the sunny Wildschönau upper valley. The pretty and typical Tyrolean village is a main resort in the upper valley and impresses guests in particular with its 250 year old Baroque parish church. It offers many cosy and rustic guest houses, where guests can let themselves be spoilt. Oberau exudes an especially lovely charm, making it a favourite. There are five drag lifts at Roggenboden in resort and a very good ski bus connection ensures a comfortable start into the "Wildschönau" ski area. Let yourself be spoilt by hospitality and peace! If it's too still, guests can also have fun on the toboggan run at Roggenboden or in the "Stadl-Ápres Ski Bar".
SkiDue to the interconnection of the ski areas Wildschönau and Alpachtal, accessible with the in 2012 constructed gondola, the lift pass "Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau" offers a total of 109 km of piste including ski routes (for more sporty and daring riders up to 145 km of piste are possible). With this lift pass you have access to the ski areas Markbachjoch/Lanerköpfl, Oberau, Thierbach, Schatzberg, as well as Kramsach, Reither Kogel and Wiedersberger Horn. This sums up to a total of 49 possible access points incl. conveyor belts, located between 650 and 2,025 m altitude! Various levels of difficulties ensure that beginner, as well as pros can really enjoy themselves here.
From seasons 2017/18 winter there is something new at Schatzberg: the 4-person gondola is modernised and turned into an 8-person gondola, offering more comfort and shorter waiting times.
Families and pleasure skiers will most enjoy Schatzberg and Reither Kogel, where the little one's are in good hands in Bodo's children's club! Since 2016/17 there is the new Eva-Maria Brem giant slalom racing track at Reither Kogel where you can measure your speed! Ambitious skiers can swing down the northern mountain side of the Markbachjoch and Lanerköpfl, as well as speed through various deep powder snow areas and free rider areas with 16 km of marked ski routes.
These various piste offers can be easily reached with complementary ski bus. For snowboard freaks there are various options to run riot: in the snow park at the Wiedersberger Horn, the fun park at Schatzberg and the Race'n'Board Arena in Niederau - all offering loads of fun and action!
Those, looking for some more diversity can upgrade the lift pass to the Super Ski Card (see Ski Region). You can access 22 ski regions in Tyrol and Salzburg, with 2,750 km of pistes, accessible via 943 lifts. Unlimited skiing fun!
Oberau is a great starting point for skiers who, in addition to skiing, also want a relaxing holiday. The bars and gasthofs in the resort indulges you to relax and enjoy a good meal and drink after a long day on the slopes.
From the 2016/2017 season, winter sports fans can look forward to the new Norderbergalm ski hut at Markbachjoch. Here you a well cared for with hot and cold drinks and regional dishes.
Those who don't want to opt out on good aprés ski can take the comfortable "Nightliner" to the resorts of Wildschönau, to enjoy and take part in the varied nightlife offered. Among others, the "Bobo's-Heustadl-Bar" at the Markbachjohn valley station or the "Gruttn-Bar" at the Schatzbergbahn valley station are good choices for hungry and thirsty skiers.
Still haven't had enough of snow-fun after a day in the slopes? In the town district of Roggenboden, night-tobogganing and night skiing regularly take place.
If you prefer a more laid-back and romantic evening, you shouldn't miss a stroll after sunset in the "Geheimnisvolle Schlucht" (mysterious ravine) with a torchlight hike and mulled wine. Enchanted horse-sleigh-rides are not uncommon here, and can turn your winter holiday into quite an extraordinary experience.
Cross-country fans' hearts will beat faster on 40 km of excellently prepared piste. You can explore the sunny Niederau and Oberau valley, as well as the Mühltal and Auffach valleys in a gorgeous setting.
The trail is never far from a traditional tavern, which is a definite plus. Difficulty levels range from easy to intermediate and the longest stretch is the 20 km from Penning to Roggenboden. Especially lovely is the 7 km long, intermediate high-altitude Schönanger trail at 1,190 m.
In Oberau, cross-country skiers can look forward to 16 km of trails, including a 7 km long trail to Niederau and a 1.5 km long trail in the valley which is also perfectly suited for beginners.
