About Niederau - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Niederau - precious jewel of Tyrol!
Niederau is situated at 824 m at the valley entrance to Wildschönau, only about 7 km from Wörgl, the nearest city. The typical Tyrolean alpine village, located on the edge of the Kitzbühel Alps and the foot of the Markbachjoch (1,500 m), sets standards for cosy winter sports. The parish church, with its distinctive, pointed church tower distinguishes the townscape, which has enjoyed the skiing tradition since 1947.
The resort wins guests over with fair prices and a rustic, romantic charm. A family-friendly selection of activities, as well as varied cuisine, ensure an enjoyable holiday! Several lifts run from the centre into the ski area, and you can easily reach the other pistes in Wildschönau with the free ski bus.
SkiDue to the interconnection of the ski areas Wildschönau and Alpachtal, accessible via the gondola, the lift pass "Ski Juwel" offers a total 109 km of piste including ski routes (for more sporty and daring riders up to 145 km of piste are possible). With this lift pass you have access to the ski areas Markbachjoch/Lanerköpfl, Oberau, Thierbach, Schatzberg, as well as Kramsach, Reither Kogel and Wiedersberger Horn. This sums up to a total of 45 possible access points incl. conveyor belts, located between 650 and 2,025 m altitude! Various levels of difficulties ensure that beginner, as well as pros can really enjoy themselves here.
Since the 17/18 winter season, there has also been an update awaiting skiers on the Schatzberg: the 4-person-gondola is modernised and turned into an 8-person gondola, offering more comfort and shorter waiting times.
Families and pleasure skiers will most enjoy Schatzberg and Reither Kogel. Here, the little ones are in good hands in Bobo's children's club! Since 2016/17 there is the new Eva-Maria Brem giant slalom racing track at Reither Kogel. Here, you can measure your speed! Ambitious skiers can swing down the northern mountain side of the Markbachjoch and Lanerköpfl, as well as speed through various deep powder snow areas and free rider areas with 16 km of marked ski routes.
These various piste offers can be easily reached with complementary ski bus. For snowboard freaks there are various options to run riot: in the snow park at the Wiedersberger Horn, the fun park at Schatzberg and the Race'n'Board Arena in Niederau - all offering loads of fun and action!
Those, looking for some more diversity can upgrade the lift pass to the "Super Ski Card" (see Ski Region). You can access 22 ski regions in Tyrol and Salzburg, with 2,750 km of pistes, accessible via 943 lifts!
Apres ski in Wildschönau offers something for everyone. Attractively located, cosy huts and snack stations on the ski area or in the valley invite you to turn in for good apres ski. A good address for getting started is, for instance "Bobo's-Heustadl-Bar", located directly at the valley station of the Markbachjoch lift, or the "Gruttn-Bar", at the valley station of the Schatzberg lift.
Since 2016/2017 season, winter sports fans can look forward to the new Nordbergalm ski hut at Markbachjoch. Here you a well cared for with hot and cold drinks and regional dishes.
Great fun for the whole family is a go on the Wildschönau toboggan run, or maybe also a snowshoe hike through the wonderful winter landscape of the upper valley. In the evenings there are numerous restaurants and pubs with typical Tyrolean specialities.
Night-owls will find it worth visiting the various bar, pubs and discos, which also partly offer live music, later in the evenings.
Cross-country fans' hearts will beat faster on 40 km of excellently prepared piste. You can explore the sunny Niederau and Oberau valley, as well as the Mühltal and Auffach valleys in a gorgeous setting. The trail is never far from a traditional tavern, which is a definite plus.
In Niederau itself, cross-country skiers can look forward to 14 km of trails. Difficulty levels range from easy to intermediate. Especially lovely is the approx. 5 km long, intermediate high-altitude Schönanger trail at 1,200 m.
