About Mortschach - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Mörtschach - snow-sure skiing on Austria's highest mountain!
The lovely resort Mörtschach is situated at an altitude of 950 m, between the imposing Grossglockner Massive, the Lienz Dolomites, the Schober Massif and the Kreuzeck Massif. You can either relax and gather your strength or go on an exploratory tour in the heart of the natural surroundings. With a total area of approx. 1,856 km², the Hohe Tauern National Park is the largest nature preserve in the Alps and includes impressive glaciers and rock faces.
There are also many interesting day trip destinations near Mörtschach, e.g. the church in Heiligenblut, the Franz-Josefs-Höhe, the Astener Moor or the charming small town of Lienz, with its numerous shopping opportunities.
SkiWith the lift pass "Grossglockner" you will find 55 km of snow-sure and mainly free pistes, as well as 12 lift systems between the altitudes of 1,301 and 2,989 m available to use. Here, at the foot of the highest mountain in Austria (3,798 m), with a spectacular backdrop, skiers, boarders and carvers will find mainly intermediate pistes.
For practising the first swings in the snow, the wide slopes at the Sonn- and Fleissalm are ideal to use. The steepest piste from the Schareck peak to Fallbichl is something of a challenge, just as the ski route from Schareck to the Fleissalm. A unique experience is the ride from the Rossbach middle station to the Fleissalm in the tunnel lift, which leads through a former water transfer tunnel.
As the majority of the pistes is above the tree line, there are also many off-piste possibilities to try a few swings directly alongside the piste. The free ride arena at the Großglockner doesn't leave anything to be desired either. Between the Gjaidtroghöhe (2,989 m) and the mountain resort Heiligenblut there are various runs for skiers and snowboarders, which are just waiting to be explored. On an area of over 15 km², free riders can really let loose. Great ski tours can be found at the Hohe Tauern National Park - this is one of the biggest ski tour areas of the Eastern Alps. There is even a National Park ski tours bus.
The quaint huts in the ski area invite you in for a traditional snack, which you can enjoy in front of a magnificent mountain panorama. Families with children and tranquillity seeker will feel well at home here.
You definitely won't get bored in Mörtschach! After you have had fun on the piste you can let yourself be spoilt in one of the traditional inns with special Carinthian delicacies. Eventful day trips can be taken in the Hohe Tauern National Park, and curling, snowshoe hikes and tobogganing offer a lot of variety.
Those looking for an adrenaline rush should try ice climbing on the frozen waterfall. Numerous events and concerts are organised throughout the year in Mörtschach and the surrounding area, ensuring tons of fun and great entertainment.
In the resort there are traditional shops, such as the farming handicrafts shop, where you can buy and view local handicraft products, and offers you a chance to be creative yourself. Furthermore, several interesting museums, such as the Goldbergbau Museum or the Schmutzerhaus with their diverse exhibitions, are available to visit. For shopping fans, a trip to the charming town of Linz is well worth it, with its numerous shopping possibilities.
Cross-country fans will find a small but very well maintained cross-country trail network covering a total of approx. 12 km in Heiligenblut, which is approx. 15 km away. Beginners will find especially the Sonnblick track well suited, which offers an easy start with only 50 m difference in altitude on a length of 5 km.
The 2 km long high-altitude track at Fallbichl however is a bit more challenging, but still good to manage. On 2,200 m altitude a magnificent view of the surrounding mountains is the treat for the efforts at high altitude. However, the trail can be used first in spring.
