Mittersill is located approximately 25 km west of Zell am See, 30 km south of Kitzbühel and 27 km east of early Salzach Valley in Krimml.
Mittersill straddles the River Salzach and one of its tributaries; Felber. The city is bordered to the south of the Hohe Tauern mountain range, and north of the Kitzbühel Alps.
There is evidence of settlements in the area Mittersill in the Bronze Age around 2200 BC .. Mittersill in itself was first founded in the 11th century as part of Bavaria.

It allows access to Resterhöhe ski area, which in turn is connected to the ski areas of Hahnenkamm in Kitzbühel Kirch and 3S Aerial Tram; a structure with the longest duration of its kind in the world.
Mittersill is also close to other well-known ski resorts such as Zell am See, Kaprun and Zillertal Arena.
A large tungsten mine is located south of Mittersill. The ore consists essentially of scheelite.
