Mayrhofen - skiing "Made in Austria"!
The lively resort Mayrhofen is located at the further end of the Zillertal and is one of the most popular winter sports resorts in Austria! It has an almost perfect offer of activities to present to its guests: for relaxation there is the activity pool area with sauna complex, and sports can be found on the ice rink, but curling, cross-country skiing, tennis and squash also belong to the sports offers. If you are looking for some adrenaline take a try on the toboggan run or on the huge water slides, visit the theatre, cinema or experience folklore. Besides many après ski opportunities on the mountain or in the valley, you can also turn into the famous "White Lounge" of the igloo hotel on the Ahorn mountain to chill-out music and some cool drinks. Family will feel well at home in Mayrhofen, as there are many special offers for children and this ensures relaxing and exciting holidays in the snow.
SkiWith the "Zillertaler Superskipass" you can choose from 530 kilometres of piste in the Zillertal Arena, by the Mayrhofen lifts, in the Ski and Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000,in the ski area Hochzillertal – Hochfügen – Spieljoch, and the 66 km of piste in the Wildkogel-Arena at Bramberg. The ski areas are all excellently linked to one another by a free train and bus shuttle (see ski region). Since a few years, the Zillertal Arena offers free-of-charge Wi-Fi in all of its ski areas! In other words, not only can you enjoy the white bliss and the sun, but also share your latest experiences and highlights directly with your loved ones at home.
Mayrhofen, with the action-packed mountain Penken and the skiers' paradise Ahorn offer 142 km of piste, as well as 9 km of ski routes and have everything a winter sports fan may dream of: challenging, black pistes on the Penken, including the famous "Harakiri" with 78% descent and which also gets experts' hearts pumping, as well as wonderfully wide pistes for beginners and carvers on the Ahorn. The spectacular Penken Park is known as an international hotspot for the freestyler scene and in the White Lounge igloo bar you can enjoy cool drinks in front of a unique panorama.
The ski tour recommendations offered by the lift company are perfect ways to explore the mountains around Mayrhofen: experienced skiers choose the Höhenmeter-Fresser circuit, during which you pass a total of 13,000 metres in altitude. Or you try the Fun + Action circuit that doesn't only take you to Harakiri, but also to the popular Penken Park and the race tracks in the area. Wallowers and families will appreciate the Beginner's ircuit Penken and the Family Circuit Ahorn. Pleasure carvers, beginners and families will find their perfect spot to ski on the broad and sunny piste. More experienced skiers will enjoy the demanding valley run.
The entire ski area is connected via 58 lift systems, including the largest gondola in Austria, the Ahorn gondola! And with the combination lift system Penken you can even choose if you prefer the gondola or chair lift. Further there are numerous snow canons with guarantee snow coverage of 100% in the ski area. For the 18/19 winter season, a 10-person monocable gondola will also be opened, connecting the Mösl am Hochschwendberg district with the Penken action mountain.
A special highlight is the Hintertuxer glacier: It is known to be one of the best glaciers with some of the most challenging pistes in the Alps, due to its size. At 1,500 - 3,250 m altitude Austria's only whole-year ski area offers 60 km of prepared pistes, 22 modern lifts and as a highlight a 12 km long descent to the valley.
Non-skiers can enjoy a brand new highlight on Ahorn! Here, you have the possibility off pistes, to try out the new toboggan Pistenbock.
First enjoy the fabulous descents, then celebrate with an epic après ski - this is what Mayrhofen is all about! A really popular place in the ski area is the "Pilzbar" at the mountain station of the new 3S-Penkenbahn. After the lift closes, you just continue celebrating in the valley. Names like "Icebar", "Brück'n Stadl", "Yeti Bar" or "Hiata-Madl" are music to the ears for every après ski fan. For night owls, the party continues after dinner. Mayrhofen has a lively nightlife, and those who want to party can do so in clubs like "Scotland Yard" or "New Speakeasy Arena" into the early hours of the morning. In the “Sports Arena Disco” party animals will have a blast in this three-story club!
Those who prefer a cosy evening can enjoy their time meeting people in one of the cafés or bars, or enjoy the regional specialities in one of the many restaurants. A special highlight is the "White Lounge", directly at the Ahorn gondola: During the day you can chill indoors or outdoors on loungers, in the evening, the locale is a chic party venue in the ice. And those who have always dreamed of sleeping in an igloo will have the chance to make their dream come true!
As an exciting alternative, you can go on a coach ride through the Mayrhofen-Hippach holiday region or go ice skating on the ice rink. Those looking for adventure are recommended to visit the various ice waterfalls for ice climbing or paragliding in winter, where you can enjoy a fascinating view and mountain air during a safe tandem flight.
Every resort in Zillertal has its own cross-country runs. Altogether there is now a network of approx. 125 km. Around Mayrhofen and Hippach you can find 35 km of well-tracked tours, some of which are in skating style. The longest run (10 km) leads from Mayrhofen to Hollenzen. A 25 km long local tour leads from Zell am Ziller to Mayrhofen.
For further variations on your trips you can use the tracks in Gerlos. Here you will also find the 7 km high-altitude cross-country run which is very snow-sure. There are also 4 new tracks in Burgstall. You can decide if you'd rather try the racing trail, the pro's run or just enjoy easy skating in a wonderful winter landscape. 3 of those trails are also lit until 22:00 p.m. and you can therefore remain sporty into the late evening hours. And for those who just can't get enough, why not try the 200 km Pinzgau-Run?
