The popular resort Maria Alm is surrounded idyllically by the "Stone Sea" and the impressive mountain massif of the Hochkönig, and therefore offers a magnificent mountain panorama! Together with Hinterthal, Dienten and Mühlbach, Maria Alm builds a huge interconnected ski area with sunny but still snow sure slopes. The picture of the old centre of Maria Alm is now characterised by the landmark of the village's pilgrim church. The ski area offers a large selection of activities for children and is especially for families the perfect holiday destination. Due to the diverse offers of pistes with easy to intermediate runs even experts will get their money's worth. Furthermore, in and around Maria Alm there are plenty of cross-country trails for all abilities, which invite you to take part in extensive tours through the magnificent landscape.
SkiThe lift pass "Ski amadé" gives you access to a jaw-dropping 760 km of piste and 270 lifts (see ski region). In other words, one single lift pass allows you to use the piste in the regions "Salzburger Sportwelt", "Schladming-Dachstein", "Gastein", "Hochkönig " and "Großarltal". You will definitely get your money’s worth here!
The local ski area of Maria Alm, "Hochskönig" (2, 941 m), is particularly well-known for its guarantee of snow. And if the snow does not fall as expected then snow machines, snow cannons, piste equipments and snow-making pond will make sure you have undisturbed skiing fun. 120 km of well-prepared pistes and 34 modern lifts are available at the child-friendly ski area. The hardest piste is the 3.5 km long Mühlbacher Ost descent. However, there are more challenging slopes at Aberg-Langeck (1, 900 m), but beginners get to join in the fun here, too. The snow park at Aberg with tables, half pipe, slides and jumps is perfect for snowboarders. Furthermore, the place offers some good freeriding opportunities. There is a ski bus that runs between the individual areas and which is free to all lift pass bearers.
The Königstour in the Hochkönig ski area is a beautiful ski route - and one of the longest in the Alps. The total length of 32 km can be explored in only one day, making it an optimal day excursion for the whole family. Since 2012, the Königstour connects the ski areas of Mühlbach, Dienten and Maria Alm.
Do you want to share your skiing day experiences with family and friends? No problem! In the Hochkönig ski area alone, a total of 13 wifi hotspots are available. These provide you with uncomplicated and free-of-charge internet connections in funparks, lift stations and ski huts. The Kings Cab is Austrias first mountain railway that is equipped with a wifi hotspot.
The parasol bars at the Aberg- Valley Station invite you to see out the day day on the piste in a sociable fashion. In neighbouring Dienten après ski can be found in „Bründlstadl“and „Dorfstadl“! Those who want to keep the party going can head to “Chili” or in the “Almer Tenne” in Maria Alm.
Those wanting to have a quieter time can pay a visit to one of the traditional restaurants, where your taste buds will be tantalized with local delicacies, such as Wiener Tafelspitz, Lammbratl (lamb roast) with dumplings or cheese fondue.
Besides skiing or snowboarding, you can still be active with a variety of ski tours and 85 km of winter hiking trails. Snow-shoe hiking is also a great alternative, as well as toboggan parties. In Maria Alm alone there are two illuminated toboggan runs that you can make use of. Water babies can let loose in the indoor pool.
Various cross-country trails with a total length of 30 km offer the right route around Maria Alm for all abilities. The Schattberg trail (flood-lit) in Maria Alm is suitable for beginners. Those looking for more of a challenge can use the 12 km long Krallerwinkl trail. The 7 km long Hochkönig trail (1,300 – 1,370 m) is a high altitude track at easy level.
The cross-country trail network in the region of Hochkönig comprises a total of 47 km, as well as a further 22 km of skating style trails, which connects to the Saalfeldener network.
