About Kaltenbach Ziller Valley - presentation, information, photos and recommendations
Kaltenbach - optimal skiing in Zillertal!
Kaltenbach, together with Ried and Stumm, is positioned in the heart of the valley, the so called "first holiday region in the Zillertal". Kaltenbach is the largest and best known among these three resorts. Thanks to the ring road, thorough-traffic doesn't exist here. The smaller and quieter village of Ried is right on the border of Kaltenbach. Stumm, on the opposite side of the valley, is approx. 1.5 km from the gondola to the ski area "Ski-optimal" and offers a special flair with its beautiful village square. All three districts have a modern tourist infrastructure with, among other amenities, indoor pools and various recreational attractions. In the middle of the ski area Hochzillertal lay the "Kristallhütte" and the "Wedelhütte", which are known to be two of the best ski huts in the Zillertal, and have already given shelter to many famous celebrities. Further, numerous restaurants offer regional specialities like traditional "Kasspatzen" pasta with cheese, home-made apple strudel, and "Kaiserschmarrn," sugared pancakes with raisins.
SkiWith the "Zillertaler Superskipass" you can choose from 487 kilometres of piste in Hochfügen, at the Spieljoch, in Hochzillertal, in the Zillertal Arena (Zell, Gerlos, Königsleiten, Wald, Krimml and Gerlosstein), at Penken, and Ahorn, at the Horberg and in the Ski- und Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000 (Mayrhofen, Finkenberg, Eggalm, Rastkogl, Hintertux glacier). The ski areas are all excellently linked to one another by a free train and bus shuttle. Since the 2013/14 winter season, the Zillertal Arena offers free-of-charge wifi in all of its ski areas! In other words, not only can you enjoy the white bliss and the sun, but also share your latest experiences and highlights directly with your loved ones at home (see ski region).
From Kaltenbach you have easy access to the ski area "Ski-optimal Hochzillertal-Hochfügen", which has been repeatedly awarded by the experts at skiresort.de. Since the new connection between the ski areas of Hochfügen and Hochzillertal there is now a total of 76 km of piste available. The valley station Hochfügen is at an altitude of 1,500 m, guaranteeing that ski-fanatics have total snow reliability up to the end of April. The upper valley is great for skiers seeking a ski area for all ability levels. The new lifts grant access to a glorious skiing terrain reaching altitudes of 2,500 m.
A special highlight is the weekly night skiing on the floodlit pistes in Kaltenbach. Freestylers will find the "Bretterpark" available within the ski area, to burn off steam.
The après ski Mecca of Hochzillertal has so much to offer with respect to a successful day on the piste. Rustic and cosy huts can be found all along the pistes. Just relax sitting at the fire place or lounging on a deck chair. Especially extravagant is a break in the "Kristallhütte" or "Wedelhütte". Later on, you can go and enjoy a traditional "Jagertee" or mulled wine in the "Postalm" or at "Seetal'S Schirmbar", directly at the valley station Hochzillertal. In the evening, the action starts in the pubs and clubs, where the partying and socializing goes on until the early hours! Every Wednesday and Friday you can hit the slopes at night, taking the valley run home (until 22:00).
In the evening, toboggan races by torchlight are offered, or perhaps go on a romantic walk by lantern light. You can also spoil yourself in the many restaurants and taverns of the village. A culinary highlight of the ski area Kaltenbach-Hochzillertal are the crystal huts, who were awarded the best ski huts of 2014 by Skiresort.de, the world's largest ski area review portal. The huts themselves, which can be found in the mountain station Kristall-Express at an altitude of 2,150 m, offers you young, creative cuisine at attractive prices. Fresh, regional products are served. In the inner huts, you can find an open fireplace as well as quaint parlours, and nice weather providing, a bar-adjacent sun terrace with lounge chairs and water beds can be enjoyed. In addition, since the winter season 2013/2014, a wine cellar has been added.
If you want to remain active off the pistes you'll have fun swimming, ice-skating, bowling, snowshoe hiking and tobogganing – in Kaltenbach (almost) anything is possible! A trip to Fügen, to the "Erlebnistherme Zillertal" (thermal baths) is also recommendable. Here the little ones can enjoy themselves on the 133 m long activity slide - the longest in western Austria.
Every resort in the Zillertal has its own cross-country network. In total this forms a network of approx. 200 km length. With a total of 65 km of tracks this is the first holiday region in the Zillertal, together with the resorts Bruck, Fügen, Kaltenbach, Strass, Stumm and Uderns which form the ideal destination for cross-country skiers.
Especially lovely is the promenade track which runs from Kaltenbach to Aschau and connects the two resorts over 5 km. Further the easily to be reached trails at Fügen are also highly recommendable. The 1 km long high altitude track at 1,800 m offers an impressive view of the high Alpine landscape of the upper Zillertal.
In Uderns there is a 1.5 km long illuminated piste, a further highlight of the region. This piste enables visitors of all skiing levels to continue practising in the evenings. If you are looking for a challenge, try the trail from Fügen via Uderns to Ried, with 15 km the longest in the entire region.
