General information
Hallstatt is 508 m above sea level at Lake Hallstatt with approximately 950 inhabitants. This small charming village offers an inexhaustible range of interesting options for culture, sport and leisure making a vacation or trip to Hallstatt along the famous Austrian Romantic route a pleasurable and memorable experience.
The breath-taking landscape surrounding the charming village with its skillfully constructed houses that stand witness to a journey through time made distinct by architectural styles from Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque periods up to modern day, they play just a small part of what makes Hallstatt so special and unique. Since December 1997 the region of 'Hallstatt/Salzkammergut' has been honored with a position on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
How to get there
By car: From Vienna: on the A1 motorway to Linz via St. Pölten - Knoten Linz - Knoten Voralpenkreuz- exit Regau - direction Bad Ischl, Bad Goisern to Gosauzwang or Gosau
From Nürnberg: via Passau - exit middle - B12 - direction Gmunden, Bad Isch, Bad Goisern, Gosau
In the direction of Linz, ??
By train: Vienna to Attnang-Puchheim; Attnang-Puchheim - Hallstatt
By airplane: Salzburg (80 km) or Linz (100 km).
Summer resort
A visit to the 'Hallstatt salt worlds' is a must! Have a look at the town of Hallstatt from the ship and you will never forget this wonderful sight which is famous all over the world. If you want to take a walk or go for a proper hike, the 'Salzberg - cable car' will take you up to the 'Hallstatt high valley' from where you have a great view over the region. Along with its 7000 year old salt mining history, the UNESCO World Heritage village of Hallstatt is also the starting point for 40 hiking destinations in the Dachstein-Region. Another great destination are the famous 'Dachstein Caves'. For all that like to see it underwater - check out the divepark Dachstein - Salzkammergut.
Cultural events in summer:
'Hallstatt Kulturell' offers every Tuesday fantastic events (different types of music), lake concerts, brass band concerts, choire concerts held in the church, every Friday evening candle-light boat ride on Lake Hallstatt, guided village tours every Wednesday and Saturday (July and August).
Winter resort
Winter has an attraction of its own - discover it by taking romantic walks in the magical snow-capped Echern valley or around the charming historical village. A perfect way to escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life.
The famous region has an inexhaustible variety of activity. You can ski the impressive mountain range or relax in one of the local hot thermal spring bathing spas (Bad Ischl and Bad Aussee).
Ski fields in the area: (reachable by ski bus free of charge): only 5 km away is Obertraun with its 'free-ride arena Krippenstein', approx. 18 km is Gosau with its ski region 'Dachstein West'. In 'Echerntal' is a small T-bar for children and beginners (skilift Speiger). The Krippenstein is the mountain of discoveries, conquests and challenges. The Dachstein West is an undisputed favourite spot for familys pleasure skiers. Also beginners feel comfortable on these easy to middle trails.
