Fügen - Skiing adventure in the Zillertal!
Fügen is the largest and most popular resort in the lower Zillertal and offers a long history and an impressive piece of culture. The well-known Christmas song "Silent Night, Holy Night" originates from here, and the historic chapels and churches, the local museum, the exhibition cheese dairy and many more facilities give the resort a multifaceted appearance. The narrow alleyways in the old town centre invite you to stroll and linger with all its beautiful shops, restaurants and bars. The free ski bus takes you comfortably to the valley station of the ski area Spieljoch and Hochfügen-Zillertal.
Those who still have enough energy after a day of skiing, can enjoy themselves alongside the piste, in the valley stations or in the resort itself. Fügen has everything to offer, whether it be a romantic ski hut, funky umbrella bar or a cosy restaurant! The resort also offers a diverse programme for leisure time activities off piste, for instance with ice skating rinks, toboggan runs, romantic horse drawn sledge rides and snowshoe hikes. A special highlight is the "Erlebnistherme Zillertal", a spa and swimming pool complex, with various slides, children's and baby pool and a modern spa and sauna area.
SkiWith the "Zillertaler Superskipass" you can choose from 530 kilometres of piste in the Zillertal Arena, by the Mayrhofen lifts, in the Ski and Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000, in the ski area Hochzillertal – Hochfügen – Spieljoch, and the Wildkogel-Arena at Bramberg. The ski areas are all excellently linked to one another by a free train and bus shuttle. Since a few years, the Zillertal Arena offers free-of-charge Wi-Fi in all of its ski areas! In other words, not only can you enjoy the white bliss and the sun, but also share your latest experiences and highlights directly with your loved ones at home (see ski region).
Fügen itself offers skiing enjoyment in two connected ski areas: the Spieljoch area and Hochfügen/Hochzillertal area. The valley station of Hochfügen/Hochzillertal can be reached by ski bus from Fügen and is located at an altitude of 1,500 m, guaranteeing snow until the end of April. The upper valley is great for skiers seeking a ski area for all ability levels. The snow park with the half-pipe, ensures fun and action for boarders as well! Thanks to the connection between Hochfügen and Hochzillertal, there now are a total 90 km of diverse pistes (incl. ski routes), among them a lit valley descend, and 39 lifts available.
The Spieljoch ski area offers a further 17 kilometres of excellently prepared pistes and 3,5 km ski routes, a total of 10 lifts and a "magic carpet" conveyor lift for the little ones’ "first steps" in the snow. Dreamy deep snow slopes on the Geolsalm and the 7 km long run into the valley to Fügen elicit excitement from even the ablest of ski fans. Just to give you a taste of the coming peak-to-peak ski area connection between Hochzillertal-Hochfügen and Spieljoch, of which should be completed in time for the 2019/2020 winter season, an hourly ski bus connection has already been set in place for this coming winter season, offering a connection between the valley station of the Spieljoch in Fügen and Kaltenbach in Hochzillertal.
In comparison with other lesser-known resorts in the Zillertal, Fügen is truly "the place to be". The huts invite you in for refreshment, e.g. the rustic "Schihütte" at the Spieljoch valley run. Once in the valley, the après ski really sets off: whether under an umbrella or in the bars, skiers party, dance and flirt for all they're worth. Later in the evening, the party moves into the many bars and clubs or one of the four discos.
In the evening, toboggan races by torchlight are offered, or perhaps go on a romantic walk by lantern light. You can also spoil yourself in the many restaurants and taverns of the village. A culinary highlight of the ski area Kaltenbach-Hochzillertal are the crystal huts, which can be found in the mountain station Kristall-Express at an altitude of 2,150 m and offer you young, creative cuisine at attractive prices. Fresh, regional products are served. In the inner huts, you can find an open fireplace as well as quaint parlours, and nice weather providing, a bar-adjacent sun terrace with lounge chairs and water beds can be enjoyed. In addition, since the winter season 2013/2014, a wine cellar has been added.
Those who can't be parted from their skis in the evening simply head to the flood-lit piste for some night skiing! If you still have enough energy after that, the "Erlebnistherme Zillertal" is a must-visit! Here you can find a varied children's area with Austria's longest adventure slide (133 m), as well as a modern spa and sauna area.
Next to the thermal bath you can find an ice rink that organises an ice disco on a regular basis. In Fügen and the surrounding areas, you can also choose between various toboggan runs, some of which are lit in the evening. Winter hikes and relaxing horse-drawn carriage rides round off the offer perfectly.
Every resort in the Zillertal has its own cross-country network. In total this forms a network of approx. 125 km length. With a total of 53 km of tracks this is the first holiday region in the Zillertal, together with the resorts Bruck, Fügen, Kaltenbach, Strass, Stumm and Uderns which form the ideal destination for cross-country skiers.
From Fügen you have direct access to an easy trail which takes you directly to Schlitters. The 1 km long high altitude track at 1,800 m offers an impressive view of the high Alpine landscape of the upper Zillertal. In hochfügen there is also a high altitude trail which covers 9 km length in total and therefore is a bit more challenging. In Uderns there is a 1.5 km long illuminated piste, a further highlight of the region. This piste enables visitors of all skiing levels to continue practising in the evenings. If you are looking for a challenge, try the trail from Fügen via Uderns to Ried, with 16.5 km the longest one here.
