Finkenberg - the sporty relaxation village!
The probably most attractive high Alpine valley in the Zillertal, the Tux valley, stretches from 630 to 3,250 m altitude and is therefore one of the most reliable regions for snow in Austria. The cosy resorts Finkenberg, Tux and Hintertux offer exactly what it takes to enjoy a perfect winter holiday - a beautiful winter landscape, wonderful pistes and a great leisure time programme. Finkenberg is best known for its celebrities - extreme mountaineer Prof. Peter Haberler, the "Zillertaler Schürzenjäger" band, and Olympic medal winner Leonhard Stock.
The resort has something to offer for everyone: relaxation and tranquillity, but also action and adventure. 28 km of cross-country tracks are prepared on a daily basis and 68 km of winter hiking trails are maintained regularly. Numerous toboggan runs, a natural ice rink and a great offer of apres ski facilities round off the offer. Together with its famous neighbour Mayrhofen, Finkenberg offers a total of 196 km of piste, comprised in the "Ski- und Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000". And due to the close proximity to the Hintertux Glacier, the resort is the ideal place to be for a perfect winter holiday!
SkiWith the "Zillertaler Superskipass" you can choose from 515 kilometres of piste in the Zillertal Arena, by the Mayrhofen lifts, in the Ski and Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000, in the ski area Hochzillertal – Hochfügen – Spieljoch, and the Wildkogel-Arena at Bramberg. The ski areas are all excellently linked to one another by a free train and bus shuttle (see ski region). Since the 2013/14 winter season, the Zillertal Arena offers free-of-charge Wi-Fi in all of its ski areas! In other words, not only can you enjoy the white bliss and the sun, but also share your latest experiences and highlights directly with your loved ones at home.
The Ski und Gletscherwelt Zillertal 3000 offers 245 kilometres of piste and 66 lift systems between an altitude of 840 and 3,250 m and entices its visitors with fresh powdery pistes of all difficulties. Untouched white slopes and challenging mogul pistes let every winter sports fan's heart beat faster. The Hintertux Glacier is Austria's only glacier which can be accessed all year round - perfect snow, 365 days a year. 196 km of piste and 23 km of ski routes, as well as 80 lifts await you in the entire ski area, between 630 and 3,250 m altitude!
Whether you take the Gefrorenen Wand (The Frozen Wall at 3,250m) 12 km long valley run, test the mogul slope at Olperer (3,476 m) or rather enjoy the deep-snow area at Kaserer (3,093 m), you definitely won't be twiddling your thumbs looking for something to do!
A further highlight is the glacier circuit, where there are 15,000 metres in altitude and 60 km of descents to be conquered in a day. At the Penken in Mayrhofen the likes of the Harakiri descent with a drop of 78% at average (Austria’s steepest ski piste) will challenge even the most practised of skiers. Rastkogel and Horberg however, rather offer open spaces and intermediate runs for wallowers.
Even boarders will be treated to snow parks with half-pipe, tables, slides and many other exemplary elements on the glacier and at the Penken. Children can burn off steam in the kid's park at the Eggalm. There they will find a snow carousel, a magic carpet and also a snow-tubing run.
A new feature is the 10 person lift Finkenberg I, which opened in the 2017/18 winter season. It will replace the 4 person cabin lift at the valley station in Finkenberg, and starting in December, its 56 cabins will have a transport capacity of 2,400 persons per hour. Factors such as shorter transportation times, heated seats and Wi-Fi help give passengers a comfortable experience.
In Finkenberg, the "Laternd'l Pub" and the "Erlebnislokal Finkennest" ensures the best of spirits. The party atmosphere is inevitable, with DJs, a packed bar and typical après ski music! Famous "Schlager" stars Party-Reihe Tux1" in Papperla Pub" in Hintertux arrange for party-hungry audiences with their regular performances. In "Hohenhaus Tenne", directly at the Hintertux Glacier mountain station, guests can party all night long to famous party hits. To get the party animals home safely there are the so called "NIGHLINER" buses (from 18:30 - 02:00 a.m.) that run between Finkenberg and Hintertux (for a fee).
Those who aren't in the mood to party can have a tobogganing party on one of the 3 illuminated toboggan runs in the surrounding area. On the up to 5 km long runs you can let the wind clear your head - picturesque landscape included! Or you can go on a lovely hike. A total of 68 km of winter hiking trails are available in the Tux valley to choose from. At the valley station of the Finkenberger Alm lifts there is also a natural ice rink and 2 curling alleys.
If the weather is not outdoor-suitable you can enjoy yourself in one of the local indoor pools or in one of the spa facilities in the resort. For families a trip to the Playarena in Tux, a 1,000 m² indoor play park, is recommendable.
Every resort in the Zillertal has it's own cross-country tracks. In total it forms a network of approx. 125 km length. All around Finkenberg there are approx. 28 km of prepared trails, some of them also for skating. With a 14 km in total the longest takes you from Tux-Vorderlanersbach to Madseit. Due to the altitude of 1,300 - 1,450 m this trail is also still usable when elsewhere there is only slush left.
In nearby Mayrhofen there are further 35 km available. The level of difficulty of the trails around Finkenberg is mainly intermediate, around Mayrhofen it is rather easy and therefore this is the ideal place to start practising on cross-country skis. One of the longest trails at Mayrhofen is the way to Hollenzen. On 10 km you can enjoy the lovely winter landscape. Further from there you can access the valley trail which takes you all the way to Hippach and finally ends in Zell.
