Bad Kleinkirchheim - ski sports and spa!
In midst of a valley of the Gurk Valley Alps, between the Upper Gurk Valley and the Millstätter Lake, at approx. 1,100 m altitude, lies the tiny resorts Bad Kleinkirchheim and St. Oswald. Bad Kleinkirchheim is not only a climatic spa resort with healing baths, but also belongs to the most popular winter sports resorts in Austria. Since 1978 FIS World Cup Ski Championships have been held here regularly, latest in in January 2012. Enjoy a relaxing winter holiday in midst of wonderful, natural surroundings and indulge in the culinary specialities of the region. Or just explore the surrounding winter landscape which offers diverse, entertaining and enjoyable descents. Warm sunshine, snow-covered mountains and vast blue skies let a skier's heart beat faster! The modern thermal baths, which have brought the resort an accreditation as Alpine spa resort, offer the perfect contrast for relaxing after a long day on the piste.
SkiWith the lift pass "TopSkiPass Kärnten & Osttirol GOLD" you can do some ski area hopping during your holidays: the lift pass is valid in altogether 31 ski areas in Carinthia and East Tyrol. - What a variety!
In Bad Kleinkirchheim/St. Oswald you will have 103 km of piste and 26 lifts at 1,100 - 2,055 m of altitude available to choose from. On the Kaiserburg (2,055 m), the Nockalm (1,870 m) and the Brunnach (1,908 m) the pistes are all so wide, that there is something suitable for every skier and snowboarder. Especially snowboarders and freestylers will find the boardercross area at the Kaiserberg lift and the deep powder snow and freerider areas at the Mulde and Hirschsprung lifts quite enjoyable.
Less experienced skiers can divert to the Nockberg, just above St. Oswald. Wide and well maintained pistes are really good for carving. Pros will find the World Cup slope Klammer, named after the former World Champion and Olympic winner Franz Klammer, to power out on over a total length of 3.2 km.
A 300 m long flood-lit piste will bring you fun in the evenings.
The combination of Kärntner hospitality and the charismatic atmosphere of the huts, as well as the sunny spots bei Bad Kleinkirchheim, encourage one or the other ski bunny to turn in for a drink long before the day is over. The sun terrace "Nock In" in St. Oswald or the rustic "Zum Weltcup Poldl" are particularly hip. Here you can get ready to have a fantastic evening in the disco, in one of the apres ski bars or in the popular boarders' hangout, the "Sunny Spot".
You'd do well to follow Bad Kleinkirchheim's motto "From the mountains into the thermal springs". It's all about wellness here. So much so, that the town was elected to be one of the first alpine wellness resorts. The thermal springs St. Kathrein as well as the roman baths at the foot of the Kaiserburg are spring-fed and rejuvenate tired muscles in 36-degree, warm, steaming water.
Those who want to use their muscles a little more can explore the mountain landscape on snow shoes, horse-drawn sleighs or on one of the four toboggan runs. In the spa park and nearby the tennis all you can also find ice skating rinks.
Countless great trails in skating style will get you revved up! Bad Kleinkirchheim has more than 54 km of runs and St. Oswald has a further 4 km.
The high-altitude run "Nockalm" on the ridge high above Bad Kleinkirchheim entices you with a magical winter panorama. The 8 km "Römerloipe" (1,050 - 1,180 m) in the valley leads ambitious skiers on a path along soft hilltops. A 6 km long high-altitude track can be found at the Falkertsee lake: at a height of 1,750 m it is ideal for all who are looking for a challenge. Shorter and less strenuous trails run along the edge of St. Oswald.
The Bad Kleinkirchheim cross-country trail network is labelled with a quality seal.
